Project Delivery: Active New Communities Interim Project Management




The Work: Following the successful award of funds from Sport England for the Active New Communities project to Living Sport, Katie was contracted to provide interim project management services for the period May to September 2018.  The aim of the work was to initially get the project up and running whilst full time project staff members were appointed in post.  Three locations were the focus of the project in year one, namely Northstowe, Alconbury Weald and Hauxton.  Katie undertook the following work as part of the assignment:


  • Development of relationships with key stakeholders relating to the three focus sites including local authority colleagues, housing developers and housing associations
  • Development of questionnaires to gain insight from residents as to their needs, interest and willingness to engage with sport and physical activity
  • Attendance at various resident meetings and locally based events to engage directly with community members to complete questionnaires and gain insight to inform project activity
  • Research to inform the development of a list of existing, locally based sport and physical activities in the near vicinity of each focus site for signposting purposes
  • Establishment of initial taster based activities to engage residents in the localities
  • Development of the draft marketing and communications plan including appointment and management of specialist marketing support services from a design agency to develop the project branding and initial promotional collateral
  • Development of the brief for the website
  • Development of the draft monitoring and evaluation plan in conjunction with the Living Sport Insight Officer
  • Support for the development of resident led community groups to drive Sport and Physical activity in their locality
  • Involvement in the recruitment and interview process for the full time Project Manager
  • Induction support to the appointed full time Project Manager and Workforce Coordinator.


The Outcome:

  • Establishment of a constituted Sport and Wellbeing Group led by local residents in Northstowe with the aim of driving forward sport and physical activity in their community, including the continuation of yoga and dance based sessions that had already been trialled
  • The introduction of Health Walk activity in Alconbury Weald in conjunction with Huntingdonshire District Council
  • Successful handover to the full time Project Manager and Workforce Coordinator in September 2018
